Reading a conversation in Koltrix: threads, quotes and attachments
How an open conversation works in Koltrix: the summary card, trimmed quoted text, tracker removal, suspicious-mail images, the attachment viewer and printing.

On this page(11 sections)
Most of the time you spend in email is spent reading. A long thread has the same quoted history repeated in every reply, attachments scattered across messages, and sometimes a sender you do not trust. How a mail app shows all that decides whether reading takes a minute or ten.
This post walks through what you see when you open a conversation in Koltrix and what each part does. It describes the reading screen only; for the preview card in the list, see the thread preview card.
A conversation is a thread
Messages with the same subject and the same reply chain are grouped into one conversation. You open the conversation, not each message, and read it in order. Replies you sent appear in the same thread, so you can see who spoke last without switching folders.
At the top of an open conversation you can find the usual actions, such as replying, archiving, starring and marking it unread again if you want it back on your list.
The summary card
Above the messages, a Summary card gives a short description of the conversation, what the other person is asking for, and whether it is waiting on you. If the conversation has not been summarized yet, you can ask for one. It is a shortcut for deciding what to do, not a replacement for reading the message that matters; our post on when to trust AI thread summaries explains where to double-check.
The card also has a Draft reply button. It starts a reply in the composer for you to edit. Nothing is sent until you send it.
Quoted text is trimmed
Every reply carries the earlier messages below it, and a long thread can quote the same paragraph ten times. Koltrix shows the new part of each message and hides the quoted history behind a small ··· button.
- Click
···("Show trimmed content") to see the earlier text for that message. - If you do not need it, you never see it, and the thread reads as a clean list of new things people said.
The composer does the same when you reply: the quoted history sits behind ··· until you open it, so your own message stays at the top.
Images, trackers and suspicious mail
Some emails include invisible images whose only job is to tell the sender that you opened the message. Koltrix removes these, and when it has done so, the message shows a small note such as "1 tracker removed". Nothing was requested from the tracker, so the sender gets no signal.
If a message looks suspicious, for example it was flagged as phishing or sits in Spam, Koltrix keeps its remote images hidden and says why. A button lets you show them anyway. That choice applies to that message only and is not remembered, so deciding once that a doubtful message is safe does not change how the next one from that sender is treated.
Dark mode for emails that are white
Many emails are designed on a white background. If you use a dark theme, each message has a switch to view it in dark mode or on white. Use dark mode when the message is plain text-like, and switch back to white if colors or logos become hard to read.
Attachments
Attachments appear on the message they came with. Click one and a viewer opens over the conversation:
- Images, PDFs and text files open inline, so you can read them without downloading.
- Files the browser cannot display, such as many office formats, offer a Download button instead.
- If the thread has several attachments, you can page through them in reading order without closing the viewer.
This saves the usual routine of downloading five files to find the one you wanted. For advice on what to send instead of a huge attachment, see why attachments over 25 MB fail.
Printing a conversation
When you need a paper or PDF copy, for example for a record or a dispute, you can print the whole conversation. Koltrix prepares each message body for printing and puts them in order, with the subject at the top. On a long thread this takes a moment while the messages are fetched, and if something fails you get a clear message rather than a blank page.
Working with a shared mailbox
If the conversation belongs to a team mailbox, the same reading screen applies. Your teammates may have assigned it or left notes on it; those are covered in teams in Koltrix.
When something looks wrong
- A message seems to be missing. Check whether the quoted text is hidden; the earlier message may be trimmed rather than absent. Click
···to confirm. - An attachment will not open inline. Use Download. Some formats can only be read in their own app.
- Images are hidden on a message you trust. Use the show-anyway button, and remember it applies only to that message.
- A conversation is split in two. Replies whose subject was changed may start a new thread, which is how most mail apps behave.
A quick way to read a long thread
- Read the Summary card to learn what the thread is about.
- Read the newest message first, with the quoted text left trimmed.
- Open
···only on a message where the history matters. - Open attachments in the viewer instead of downloading them.
- Reply, or mark the conversation done, and move on.
What to remember
Opening a conversation in Koltrix shows you the new text of each message, hides repeated history behind ···, removes trackers, protects you from doubtful images and lets you view attachments in place. Use the summary to orient yourself, but read the message when the details matter.
